“Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things.”
T. S. Eliot, ‘Tradition and the Individual Talent’, 1919

Substitute the word poetry, with photography, or fiction and it still works. I’m sure that all of you have felt the excitement of creation, when you don’t notice your own self, but only the way the light falls on someone’s face, the shapes, the click of the shutter and words emerging from the imagined or real. I love when I’m in the flow like that, that’s why I agree with what Eliot says about poetry (and who would argue with the creator of The Waste Land) although I do believe that art can also stem from “turning loose of emotion”, for some people more than others but I guess that’s for another time. What do you think?
